Sword Artes

Also known as Techniques.

Within Elder Tale Online, when a weapon, shield (or one's body) is used to form a special technique, it is generally referred to as an Arte, Sword Arte, or Technique. These Sword Artes require precision initial motions, which then flow the rest of the way - sometimes even bringing out elemental damage during them.

Within the combat system, most things indicated as a Physical card can be considered a Sword Arte.

Wave Artes

Also known as Magic.

Within Elder Tale Online, when forming energy outside of one-self using the elements or the arcane, it is referred to as a Wave Arte, or Magic. These techniques require long recitations of phrases, which tend to be somewhat custom for every individual player. The longer the cast time, the more powerful the technique. People can move just fine while casting these, though disruptions during casting can make the entire spell falter.

Within the combat system, most things indicated as a Magical card can be considered a Wave Arte.

Subtle Artes

Artest are considered 'subtle' for the sake of combat and RP when they are marked as 'Facedown' on the card, within reason. Subtle Wave Artes end up being able to be whispered and show effects only visible to the user. Subtle Sword Artes barely light up the weapon, or do not require much in the way of movement to activate.

Practical Uses

Most Artes that have an effect that could viable be used in a practical manner, often have this described in their Card's description, as well as their Concept Grants.

For example, the Hammer Strike card, which would be considered a Sword Arte, Grants: 'Physical, Melee, Bludgeoning', which are typically used for combat. But 'Weapon Forging, Armor Forging, Metalworking and Construction' are more practical uses of this technique. A similar idea applies to things like a Firebolt Card indicating it can be used for 'Cooking', which means it could also be used to say, light a fire.
